December Extra Blog

I officially meant the owner of the store, Pierre, and he is very kind and helpful. I still have to meet Pierre's wife then I would have met every employee at my mentorship. Since my mentor Kevin has been away for sometime now due to an leg injury. The guy I've been working, Jason Cox, has agreed to be my mentor until (and if) Kevin does return.

I am still learning new things around the shop. Just like recently, I learned how to close down the store. I went to mentorship on a Tuesday instead of a Sunday like I usually do. I also learned how to make gift certificates and how to put names on layaway for customers.

The past few weeks have been pretty slow unlike most weeks I have been going. It gives me more time to ask questions to Jason while not doing anything at times.

November Extra Blog

This past month I haven't been with my mentor. My mentor has had an injury that has been him out of work for the past couple of weeks and will be back in a couple of more. So in the meantime, I have been mentoring with another employ named Jason Cox. Jason is very helpful with my mentoring and helping get my hours done. A month ago is when I actually first met him too.

I'm putting the hours with Jason as my independent component hours until Kevin is once again well and back at the store. I am also watching shows/movies about comic books, and reading comics and learning some history about comics, to go towards my independent component as well.

Blog 10: EQ

1. I reviewed the rule of three for writing an EQ.

2.
  • A. This EQ does provide some good frame by telling us what we can research on losing weight loss. As for the second rule, it can be a good way to explain why a healthy weight loss is good. It gets to the point, but I feel like it is too simple.
  • B. For the format I feel it is pretty standard and it flows. Can make some good arguments out of it. I feel like a lot of research can go into this.
  • C. All these questions seem like the same with just different topics. This questions seems to fill in the needs of the the rule of three for a essential question.
  • D. This EQ is too small and seems too largely ranged for research. It can be more straight forward on what it wants to talk about and that will make it better.

Blog 9: Lesson 1 Reflection

1. Positive statement - What are you most proud of in your Lesson 1 Presentation and why?

I am most proud of getting all of my information out there during the presentation and I am also proud of having the audience have fun with it and get a few laughs from them.

2. Questions to consider

     a. What assessment would you give yourself on your Lesson 1 Presentation?

          P

     b. Explain why you deserve that grade using evidence from the Lesson 1 component contract.

I feel like a deserve that grade because I made all the requirements for the P section and I felt like my presentation when by very smoothly.

3. What worked for you in Lesson 1?

Everything seemed to go smoothly for Lesson 1. There seemed to be no problems and I gathered a lot of information that helped me answer my working EQ.

4. If you had a time machine, what would you have done to improve your Lesson 1?

I liked what I did with my Lesson 1. I don't think I would change anything about it.

Extra October Blog

So far for my mentorship I learned a lot about customer interaction and how to get customer satisfaction. I was told that I learned to use the register a lot quicker than his last intern. I'm really enjoying my senior project so far and have a lot of fun doing it. Especially that I get to read some free comics every now and then.

I am thinking that I want to try to change my independent component because it is hard to find more mentorship when I can barely make this current mentorship sometimes. I will have to talk to Piggot when I have the chance to so I can see what I can do instead.

I've learned some of the basics at my mentorship, but I plan learn some more difficult things about managing a comic store with my mentor. I am sure he is willing to show me some new stuff right now and I will be ready with whatever he throws at me.

And a little cool thing is that I get a 20% discount off of comics.

Blog 8: Research and Working EQ

1. What is your working EQ?

What is the best way to have customer satisfaction for your store?

2. What is the possible answer for your working EQ?

  • having conversations with your customers, it doesn't have to be about comics as long as they felt comfortable in that environment
  • always greet them when they walk in and say "thank you for coming" when they leave
  • always be available for their questions and their needs
3. What is the most important source you have used that has helped you come up with an answer for you working EQ?

The most importance source I have had is my mentor. He knows a lot about interacting with the customers and has even showed me his little tips and tricks on what to expect from different customers and what to know. He has been doing this for a while now, and he has seen about every type of customer there is and having his tips helps out a lot.

4. Who is your mentor, or where are you mentoring, and how does it relate to your working EQ?

My mentor is Kevin from JPM Comics at Glendora. My mentorship has to do with my working EQ because it is about managing a store and there will always be customers. One of the most important things to managing a store is too be a "people person" because you will be talking to a lot of people. If you are not one, then this isn't for you. Luckily, I am good with people and I have fun talking to the customers and helping them out.

Blog 7: Independent Component 1

1. Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.

For my 30 hours I plan to just do more mentorship hours, but at a different comic shop if I can. I want to get more experience from a different point of view for my topic. It will help me a lot to better understand how to manage a comic shop and the procesures that I need to take.

2. Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.

I will find another comic shop that will be willing to take in me for mentoring and mentor there for the amount of hours that are needed for this independent component and log them for evidence.

3. And explain what you will be doing that will help you explore your topic in more depth.

I will be doing what ever my mentor tells me to do at the shop (working register, fixing the shelves, stocking more comics, etc.) and he will give me more information each day that he feels like would help me in this project. There is something new to learn everyday.

September Extra Blog

I have found a mentorship at JPM Comics in Glendora and have done two days there already. I go every Sunday for three hours.  My mentor, Kevin, is a really nice guy and is showing me a lot about this certain topic. He is going to try to talk to his boss to see if I can do more than one day and to do more than three hours.

I am planning to interview Kevin for my second interview, but I still need to schedule it with Kevin to see what day and time would be best for him to do it.

I am also going to look into finding another comic shop I can mentor at so I can get a perspective from two different points of views and see if that'll get me more information.  I have yet to find out what I am going to do for independent component one, but I plan to find out something soon.

Blog 6 - Second Interview Preparation

1.  Who is your mentor and where do they work?

My mentor is Kevin and he works at JPM Comics in Glendora.

2.  What five questions will you ask them about their background?

Did you like comics as a kid, and how did you get into them?

How long have you been a comic book store manager?

How did you become a comic book manager?

What did you do for a job before?

Is this what you wanted to do ever since you were little?

Blog #5

1. Describe your experience in how you found your mentorship?  If you haven't found one yet, describe your experience so far in the search of a mentor.

I have not officially found a mentor yet, but I do have a few leads that say they will consider mentoring me.  I did not anticipate on how challenging it would be to find a mentor, but I do plan on getting a mentor very soon.

2. What has been your most important article you have read so far and why?

The most important article(s) that I have read so far are articles about how to actually mange a business.  I had no idea how hard owning one actually is until reading various articles for tips and different perspectives from different people. It really did help me a lot.

Additional August Blog

For my topic, Managing a Comic Store, I already have a mentor, but I want to have a second mentor just to have two points of view. I am trying to make contact with a comic book store kin Monrovia, but I have had no respond yet. I have to talk to other comic stores so at least one of them can respond to me and take me under their wing.

For the mentor I already have, I plan of interviewing him next week since he is away on business right now. But he'll be back and ready to interview before the due date.

I also had trouble with finding my pin for the library assignment of putting a book on hold, but I have finally figured it out so I should be good now.

Blog 4: Interview Preparation

1. Who do you plan to interview?  Why?

I plan on interviewing Jimmy Jay from Amazing Comic Conventions. I chose Jimmy because I felt like he was one of the best choices I can find for my senior topic. He knows the business and how to run it, so that is why I chose to interview him.

2.What additional questions do you plan to ask?

I haven't really come up with more additional questions, but I plan on those questions to make him comfortable since it seems like it might be his first time being interviewed by a random teenager.

Maybe the questions will be like:

Did you like comics as a kid?
What made you want to sell comic books for living?

Summer Mentorship

1. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgurNffFdkk1dFhmNDdsbHZLRE9JLVhWcFNBTnYwUnc#gid=0

2. Mentor: Guillermo Espino, Phone Number: (562) 440-1592

3. First question: What do we do exactly during the 10 hours of mentorship?

Second question: Is there anything else that needs to be done before completing the 10 hours?

4. The most important thing I gained from experience was learning how hard it is to own your own business. There is a lot of time and money that goes into owning your own business. It can takes years to get your business going and to actually get clients for your business. This is important because it gives me a little taste of how it is to own a business and it will help me get prepared for it.

5. For the 10 hours during the summer I did the mentorship hours with my uncle, Guillermo Espino, and he does legal work.  Mostly with helping illegal immigrants become American citizens.  But for my senior project I will most likely change my topic for something I am more interested in.  I yet to find out what that new topic is though, but I hope to find that out soon.

Blog #1

The senior presentations I saw were karate, soccer, soccer training, soccer coaching, graphic design, military leadership, teaching middle school math, acting, HIV, physical therapy, Cal Poly transit system, filmmaking, and counseling.
I don't really have any questions concerning the senior projects. All of my questions have been pretty much answered by now.
The most important parts of the senior presentations would have to be the content and the activities (and hook activities).  The content of the presentation is very important to have in of course, but you don't won't to bore your audience.  The activity needs to connect to your best answer somehow and you probably gonna need to do at least two hook activities to get your audience to pay attention again.
I'm considering on doing the topic of film making because I had taken the ROP Film class and I find the subject very interesting and fun.
I do not have an idea what I'm going to do for my summer mentorship yet.
